Anheuser-Busch Closes 50-Year-Old California Brewery

Anheuser-Busch will shutter its Fairfield, California brewery on February 22, 2026, marking the end of a facility that has operated for five decades. The closure follows the company's December 2025 announcement of shutting three U.S. breweries, including facilities in Newark, New Jersey, and Merrimack, New Hampshire. The 170-acre Fairfield property is being marketed for sale by commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield.

This decision reflects broader challenges facing the beer industry, which has experienced declining demand and consumption rates. U.S. beer production and imports dropped 1% in 2024, while craft brewer volume sales fell 4% in 2024 and approximately 5% in 2025. Domestic beer shipments declined 5.9% in 2025, representing a loss of over 8.68 million barrels. Brewers have cited rising material costs, particularly for malted barley, hops, and aluminum cans, as significant constraints on production economics.

The Fairfield closure will result in 238 layoffs and cost the city an estimated $10.7 million annually in lost revenue, including $1.2 million in water revenue and up to $559,000 in property taxes. Anheuser-Busch plans to shift production to other U.S. facilities and support affected employees with relocation opportunities within the company.
