Rocket Lab's $8 Billion Iridium Acquisition Targets SpaceX Competition

Wall Street Journal US Business •

Rocket Lab agreed to acquire satellite operator Iridium Communications in an $8 billion deal that would give the company control over Iridium's satellite fleet and wireless spectrum resources. The acquisition positions Rocket Lab to challenge SpaceX's growing dominance in satellite communications, particularly as demand for space-based connectivity intensifies across commercial and government markets.

The cash-and-stock transaction values Iridium shares at $54 each, representing a significant premium to the McLean, Va.-based company's recent trading price of $43.52. Iridium's stock has been climbing as investors recognized the value of its spectrum holdings, which proved attractive enough to justify the multibillion-dollar valuation that Rocket Lab disclosed Monday.

Industry consolidation has accelerated as satellite companies respond to SpaceX's rapid expansion with its Starlink and other offerings. The competitive pressure has pushed established players to seek merger partners, with Globalstar agreeing to Amazon's takeover in April and SES completing its Intelsat acquisition last year. SpaceX itself recently purchased spectrum assets from EchoStar to strengthen its position.

This deal reflects the satellite industry's strategic realignment as companies race to match SpaceX's scale and technological capabilities. Rocket Lab gains immediate access to Iridium's specialized satellite communications infrastructure, potentially creating a more formidable competitor in the evolving space economy.
