Rivian is pioneering a novel approach to sustainable manufacturing by powering its Illinois factory with recycled electric vehicle batteries. The electric vehicle startup has partnered with Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, to create the largest repurposed-battery energy storage system for an automotive manufacturer in the U.S.

Once completed later this year, Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois, will draw electricity from more than 100 used Rivian EV batteries housed in an area the size of a small parking lot. This innovative system will reduce the company's dependence on the power grid during peak demand hours, potentially lowering energy costs and improving grid resilience.

The collaboration between Rivian and Redwood Materials represents a significant step toward circular economy principles in the automotive industry. By finding a second life for used EV batteries, the companies are addressing both the growing demand for energy storage and the challenge of battery disposal. This initiative could serve as a model for other manufacturers seeking to reduce their environmental impact and energy costs while promoting sustainable practices in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
