The Philippine government has directed Meta Platforms to strengthen measures against false, "panic-inducing" content on its platforms, warning that unchecked misinformation could violate local laws. In a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, authorities cited concerns over misleading claims about oil price hikes and energy disruptions that risk causing economic disorder.

Government officials emphasized that in an environment of rising fuel costs and public sensitivity to economic stability, disinformation poses direct threats to public order, economic confidence, and national security. The letter from the Department of Information and Communications Technology and Presidential Communications Office stressed that the scale and speed of false content on Meta's platforms significantly amplify these risks.

Authorities expect the social media giant to implement enhanced detection and suppression systems for high-risk disinformation. This regulatory pressure comes as the Philippines grapples with economic challenges and seeks to maintain public trust during sensitive periods. The government's directive signals growing international scrutiny of tech platforms' role in managing content that could destabilize markets and erode confidence in economic institutions.
