A 26,000-pound box truck loaded with Doritos and Frito-Lay chips navigates Arizona roads without a human driver, representing PepsiCo's push into autonomous delivery. The company operates 41 trucks across Arizona, Texas and Arkansas, making it the first major U.S. consumer-goods firm to publicly deploy driverless trucks at scale on public highways.

These trucks traverse busy highways and local streets between bottling plants, storage facilities, and retail destinations including Walmart and Dollar General. While at least nine autonomous truck companies operate in Southern states, most still use human monitors or limited testing. PepsiCo's partnership with autonomous truck company Gatik distinguishes itself through fully driverless operations.

Jim Farrell, PepsiCo's senior vice president of supply chain, emphasized these aren't experimental tests but live commercial operations running in multiple markets. The deployment mirrors technical advances by Waymo and Tesla in lighter passenger vehicles, but applied to heavy-duty freight delivery.

This rollout signals autonomous vehicle technology's transition from testing to commercial viability in supply chain logistics. Consumer goods companies face mounting pressure to reduce transportation costs and improve efficiency, making driverless truck fleets an attractive solution despite regulatory and safety concerns.
