OpenAI's former chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap, is stepping down, the latest leadership change at the artificial-intelligence lab. Lightcap announced his exit to OpenAI staff in a note he posted to X, saying he was leaving to “start something new.”

“I’ll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point,” Lightcap wrote. He had served as operating chief since 2022 after joining the company in 2018, according to his LinkedIn profile. He transitioned to overseeing special projects in the spring.

Lightcap’s exit is the latest high-profile departure from OpenAI. The company’s second-ranking executive, product and business chief Fidji Simo, said she was stepping aside last month after going on medical leave in the spring.
