New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a socialist elected on a pro-worker platform, has launched multiple actions against Amazon.com. He backed the Delivery Protection Act, introduced by Council member Tiffany Cabán, which would require warehouse operators to obtain city licenses and directly hire couriers currently employed by smaller delivery firms. Amazon warned it may relocate warehouses, arguing the bill risks over 5,000 delivery jobs and burdens small businesses.

Mamdani also announced over $9 million in idling fines collected from Amazon delivery vehicles, with DEP Commissioner Lisa F. Garcia labeling Amazon a top offender. Additionally, the mayor sent cease-and-desist orders to Amazon and other retailers for selling illegal e-bikes.

Deputy Mayor Julie Su emphasized protecting workers and holding law-breaking companies accountable. Amazon contested the fines, citing tracking gaps affecting its Delivery Service Partners, and stated it requires e-bikes to meet safety standards. The conflict echoes the 2019 HQ2 dispute, when Amazon withdrew a $2.5 billion campus plan after opposition from figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Amazon has contributed around $5 million to the Five Borough Jobs Campaign opposing the bill, led by Jessica Schumer, daughter of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
