Mall operators across the country are implementing bans on unaccompanied teenagers under 18, a dramatic response to escalating disruptions at their properties. The new restrictions mark a stark reversal for an industry that spent decades courting young shoppers as a key demographic.

At the Mall at Bay Plaza in the Bronx, New York, in February, a rowdy group of teenagers descended on the property, recording videos and running between stores. Witness Darcel Clark described the scene as "really disturbing." Police arrested 18 teenagers by day's end, and some stores and restaurants locked their doors.

The bans represent a calculated bet that alienating a core demographic is preferable to losing adult shoppers and tenants. For an industry still recovering from pandemic-era vacancies, the move raises questions about whether punishing teenage customers will help or hurt long-term foot traffic.
