Regarding Peggy Noonan’s column “Anthony Fauci Unmasks Himself” (Declarations, Aug. 1): I applaud Ms. Noonan for disclosing the pettiness and smallness of one of my heroes, Dr. Anthony Fauci. The information in Ms. Noonan’s column and elsewhere is a lesson to me and others to examine critically those with whom we are inclined to agree.

Free and open discussion and access to information are at the core of efficient and honest government. We should be hesitant to place halos around the heads of people we admire, just as we shouldn’t totally condemn those with whom we disagree. The truth is usually far more complex, something we need to be reminded of frequently.
