Arafura Greenlights $1.6B Australian Rare Earths Project

Arafura Rare Earths has approved construction of a $1.6 billion mine in Australia's Northern Territory. The Nolans project aims to produce roughly 4% of the world's neodymium and praseodymium—critical minerals used in electric vehicle magnets, wind turbines, and fighter jets.

This marks Australia's first fully integrated rare-earths operation, spanning both mining and processing. The project launches as the U.S. and its allies work to reduce reliance on China, which dominates global rare-earths supply. Western governments are financing new projects and establishing stockpiles to break that stranglehold.

The Nolans development reflects accelerating Western efforts to diversify critical mineral sources. Neodymium and praseodymium prices have fluctuated amid supply concerns, making new production capacity strategically valuable for automakers, renewable energy companies, and defense contractors seeking alternatives to Chinese supply.
