French physiologist Étienne-Jules Marey first documented in 1894 that cats can right themselves midair when falling, using early video technology. This phenomenon, known as the 'falling cat problem,' has puzzled scientists for over a century. Now, new research published in The Anatomical Record offers fresh insights into how felines achieve this remarkable feat.

A team led by Yasuo Higurashi at Yamaguchi University in Japan conducted experiments using donated cat cadavers and live test subjects. The researchers discovered that cats possess extremely flexible upper thoracic vertebrae that can rotate up to 360 degrees, while lower lumbar vertebrae remain stiffer and heavier. This anatomical structure allows cats to twist their upper body first, then complete the rotation with their lower body.

Their findings support the 'legs in, legs out' model, where cats extend their hind limbs before retracting them to achieve proper landing posture. The study also revealed a right-side bias in falling cats - one test subject consistently turned right eight out of eight times. While these results provide valuable data for physicists developing mechanical models, researchers emphasize that definitively solving the falling cat problem will require more extensive study. As one expert noted, nature remains unconcerned with simplicity when it comes to feline acrobatics.
