A new study published in Scientific Reports by an international team led by anthropologists from Tel Aviv University reveals unique evolutionary adaptations in the male human pelvis. Researchers analyzed 91 modern human pelvises (63 male, 28 female) and compared them with two complete male Neanderthal pelvises.

The male modern human pelvis has hip sockets oriented more toward the front, an adaptation that benefits locomotion. This architecture positions legs slightly more forward, allowing quadriceps to absorb shock and spring the body upward during walking—described as a series of controlled falls—making gait more energy efficient and potentially giving men an advantage over long distances.

Women's pelvises, constrained by childbirth demands, couldn't develop these modifications. Study author Ella Been of Ono Academic College notes these findings could inform biomechanics, musculoskeletal medicine, rehabilitation, and injury prevention, with the Neanderthal perspective helping us better understand the modern human body.
