U.S. Sends Elite Airborne Forces to Middle East as Iran Diplomacy Looms

The Pentagon has ordered approximately 2,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division to deploy to the Middle East, significantly escalating military presence in the region. This move, disclosed by Defense officials, provides President Trump with additional military options while he pursues a diplomatic initiative with Iran. The elite troops, part of the division's Immediate Response Force, could be used to seize strategic locations like Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export hub, within striking distance of Tehran.

The deployment follows the arrival of about 4,500 Marines and brings the total of new ground troops to nearly 7,000 since the conflict began, marking a notable escalation. The airfield on Kharg Island was recently damaged by U.S. airstrikes, suggesting Marines might first repair infrastructure before bringing in heavier equipment via C-130s. Approximately 2,000 paratroopers would then likely augment these forces, though they lack heavy armor for potential Iranian counterattacks. The deployment underscores heightened tensions, though the exact location remains unclear.
