Pentagon Weighs 82nd Airborne Iran Deployment

Senior military officials are considering deploying the Army's 82nd Airborne Division to support operations in Iran, defense sources revealed. The combat forces would come from the division's Immediate Response Force, a brigade of approximately 3,000 soldiers capable of global deployment within 18 hours. While described as prudent planning, no orders have been issued by the Pentagon or U.S. Central Command.

The potential mission could involve seizing Kharg Island, Iran's primary oil export hub through which millions of barrels flow daily. The damaged airfield on the island from recent U.S. bombing raids has created strategic considerations. Military planners weigh whether Marine combat engineers should first repair infrastructure before Air Force C-130s deliver supplies and additional troops.

Such an operation could significantly impact global oil markets, potentially disrupting supply routes that affect energy prices worldwide. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit's 2,500 troops are also being considered for the mission. Military officials note Marines lack the sustainment capabilities of the 82nd Airborne forces, which could relieve Marines after initial operations.
