The US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expires today with no agreement in sight regarding its extension or a return to negotiations. While the June 17 deal, signed by Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, aimed to terminate military operations and address Iran’s nuclear program, both nations accuse the other of breaches.

Key points of contention include the Strait of Hormuz, existing sanctions, and Iran's nuclear ambitions. The US had previously committed to a $300bn reconstruction package and lifting sanctions, but tensions escalated following US strikes on Iranian infrastructure. Trump has since suggested that the US might eventually claim the Strait of Hormuz as territory.

As the deadline passes, Iran's leadership, including new security chief Mohsen Rezaei, appears prepared for tougher negotiations. While Tehran claims political victory, the regional stability remains uncertain as mediators like Qatar and Pakistan attempt to bridge the gap between Washington and Tehran.
