At least 13 people were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Tatarstan region, officials say. A child was among the victims and 39 others were injured, making it one of the deadliest single attacks on Russia since the start of Moscow’s full‑scale war in Ukraine.

The strike hit the city of Nizhnekamsk, more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, home to several major oil refineries and a large petrochemical company. The attack lasted several hours overnight and into the morning, with large plumes of smoke and flames rising into the sky and air‑raid sirens howling in the background.

The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, confirmed the strike and shared his condolences. Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev said, “This is a tremendous pain for all of us,” and a period of mourning has been declared in Tatarstan.

More than 450 Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defences overnight, Moscow said. Kyiv has stepped up long‑range strikes on facilities that support Russia’s war, while Russia continues large‑scale aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities and residential centres.
