Ukraine Deploys Combat Robots Amid Manpower Shortage

Ukraine is fielding unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) armed with explosives, guns or rockets to seize Russian positions while conserving troops. A video from last summer shows green‑capped robots crossing a valley, detonating, and prompting a Russian surrender. President Zelensky cited the operation as proof that Kyiv can win battles with machines, not just men.

The Ministry of Defense reported more than 9,000 frontline UGV missions in the past month, a three‑fold rise from November 2025 and a stark contrast to the experimental use a year ago. Robots carry far larger payloads than aerial drones, offering a stable platform for firepower but remaining vulnerable to detection and artillery. Soldiers still must occupy captured terrain or replace batteries after a 24‑hour run.

Kyiv hopes the growing robot fleet showcases a homegrown defense industry capable of exporting technology and securing barter deals for Western weapons. By demonstrating tactical proficiency with off‑the‑shelf platforms, Ukraine aims to shift perception from a charity case to a strategic partner that can augment allies' own unmanned capabilities.
