Trump's 50% Tariffs Target Strange Canadian Goods

The Trump administration imposed new 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian exports effective Saturday after Prime Minister Mark Carney ended nearly a month of trade talks, saying the U.S. "asked too much and offered too little." Carney vowed "dollar for dollar" retaliation. The tariffs, detailed in three lists, hit forest products especially hard — including 36 different kinds of plywood — raising U.S. housing costs. Alcohol faces duties amid disputes over provincial liquor monopolies restricting U.S. wine and spirits, a conflict sparked after Trump suggested making Canada the 51st state.

Oddly specific items include "mixtures of or with a basis of odoriferous substances with 20 to 50 percent alcohol by weight" and wood furniture "of a kind used in the bedroom and not designed for motor vehicle use." Clothing like anoraks, suit jackets, and national flags are also taxed, regardless of where they were manufactured. Small businesses selling honey and jewelry are affected too. Existing tariffs on aluminum, steel, autos, and lumber remain.
