Trump Weighs Gas Tax Pause as Pump Prices Hit $4.52

Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Trump administration would consider pausing the federal gas tax to ease pain at the pump. Average national gasoline prices sit at $4.52 a gallon, according to AAA, up sharply since President Trump launched military action against Iran.

Pausing the tax—roughly 18 cents per gallon on gasoline—would push prices to about $4.34. That still leaves fuel $1.50 above the $2.98 average before the Iran conflict. The modest relief would likely do little for lower-income Americans bearing the brunt of soaring costs.

Wright declined to predict oil price movements, saying only that free flow through the Strait of Hormuz would eventually bring prices down. But ship traffic remains blocked by competing blockades on each side. With gas prices still $1.50 above pre-conflict levels, this pause offers minimal relief against supply chain constraints.
