Trump Gas Tax Plan Faces Skepticism

President Trump unveiled a plan to suspend federal gas taxes as gasoline prices have surged approximately 50% since the US initiated war with Iran on February 28. The president made the announcement during a CBS phone call, stating "we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time." Trump failed to mention the measure requires congressional approval.

The potential impact would be minimal, with federal taxes totaling just 18 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24 cents for diesel. While some Democrats like Senator Mark Kelly expressed support, others dismissed the proposal as too little too late. Former Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked the idea as throwing "the peasants some more bread crumbs."

This proposal echoes President Biden's 2022 attempt, which faced Republican criticism as a "gimmicky" policy. Energy Secretary Chris Wright first floated the idea on Sunday. Trump maintains prices will "drop like a rock" after the Iran conflict ends, though he recently described the cease-fire as being on "life support."
