Trump Grants $6.9M No‑Bid Contract to Paint Reflecting Pool Blue

Trump’s administration awarded a $6.9 million no‑bid contract to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a firm with no prior federal work, to repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool blue in time for Washington’s 250th birthday. The move bypassed competitive bidding, sparking criticism about fiscal oversight and executive privilege.

Atlantic Industrial Coatings, headquartered in New Canton, Virginia, specializes in waterproofing pipelines and storage tanks, not swimming pools. Trump cited experience from his golf club, though the company’s website makes no such claim. The project ignores long‑standing plumbing issues that cost the National Park Service over $35 million between 2010 and 2012.

The reflecting pool loses up to 16 million gallons of water annually, a leak that the National Park Service must replace. Previous administrations poured more than that into fixes, yet algae and structural joints persist. Critics argue painting the surface does little to stop the underlying degradation that threatens the landmark’s integrity.

This contract exemplifies a pattern of executive favoritism that sidesteps oversight. While the administration touts swift completion, the long‑term costs and environmental risks remain unresolved. The pool’s blue makeover may be temporary, but the fiscal and procedural questions it raises will linger in Washington’s public‑service debates for years to come.
