President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran has released an American woman wrongfully detained since December 2024. "She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. The woman was identified by her attorney as Dena Karari, a dual Iranian-U.S. citizen whose passport was seized in December 2024 as she faced espionage charges.

Karari's lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed her release and thanked Trump, stating Karari "is now safe and traveling back to the United States." Genser said Karari had been subjected to "a coercive exit ban" and targeted because she operated "a non-profit called the Children of Mehr Foundation, which helped impoverished children in Iran." Though never physically detained, Genser said she "suffered enormous physical and psychological hardship" and was interrogated dozens of times.

Genser urged Iran to drop charges against local foundation staff and release all wrongly imprisoned Americans and Iranian political prisoners. As of last month, the U.S. government was tracking at least six Americans detained in Iran, including two designated as wrongfully detained.
