A United Nations report has documented over 1,700 deaths during sectarian violence in Syria's Sweida Province last July, revealing systematic killings of Druse civilians by government forces and tribal fighters. The 86-page investigation found evidence of torture, sexual violence, and extrajudicial executions targeting the minority community.

Investigators documented at least 1,707 deaths, with most victims from the Druse minority. The violence erupted after clashes between Druse and Bedouin communities, unfolding in three waves that included home raids where men and boys were separated from families before being shot. Women and children were also killed, with some forced to strip before execution.

Nearly nine months later, most of Sweida remains outside government control and 155,000 people remain displaced. While Syrian authorities have taken tentative steps to investigate, including allowing U.N. investigators to visit for the first time since 2011, the report found little evidence of accountability. Druse authorities have also failed to investigate violations by their own forces.
