Three years after being shoved into a Manhattan subway train, artist Emine Yilmaz is slowly reclaiming her life through determination and family support. The 38-year-old was left paralyzed from the neck down after a random attack in May 2023 left her with a broken neck and six subsequent surgeries. Her attacker, Kamal Semrade, was recently convicted of attempted murder and assault.

Yilmaz's recovery has been marked by both physical and emotional challenges. She cannot work and relies on $280,000 in GoFundMe donations, $600 monthly in Social Security payments, and $290 in food assistance. Her mother and sister moved from Turkey to Queens to provide round-the-clock care, while her husband Ferdi Ozsoy also returned to help despite their separation. The turning point came when she received an electric wheelchair, allowing her to venture outside independently for the first time.

Through intensive physical therapy and multiple surgeries performed by Dr. Michael Hausman at Mount Sinai Health System, Yilmaz has regained some function. She can now draw again using her left hand and has improved her English through daily interactions. She's also filed a lawsuit against the city and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, claiming negligence in not installing platform barriers. Yilmaz's story highlights the long-term impact of subway violence, which saw 19 people pushed onto tracks in 2025 alone.
