Streaming Bundles Surge as Churn Crisis Forces Industry Partnerships

Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney made an unlikely alliance, bundling HBO Max with Hulu and Disney+ at a discount. The move cut cancellation rates dramatically, with CEO David Zaslav calling it 'as close to a solve as you're going to have' for the industry's subscriber retention problem.

Bundles now represent 33% of new streaming subscriptions, up from just 10% two years ago, according to Antenna research. The combined Apple TV and Peacock offering costs $20 monthly versus $30 when purchased separately. Since early 2025, 30 new bundled packages have launched, including partnerships between Fox One and ESPN, plus AMC+ and Hallmark+.

Netflix remains the notable holdout, maintaining its standalone approach despite industry pressure. Amazon leads the bundling push, creating multi-service packages it calls 'trundles' featuring AMC+, Starz, and MGM+. These combinations help smaller streamers like BritBox reach wider audiences through complementary content offerings.

The shift reflects streaming's return to cable-era business models, where live sports, commercials, and curated channel packages dominate. This marks a fundamental restructuring of digital television's economic foundation.
