The weather is caused by a deteriorating tropical storm offshore, bringing rain and big waves to the coast. Heat advisories are in effect across the region, including desert areas like Palm Springs, where temperatures could reach 109 degrees.

The storm also caused beach erosion and flooding, leading to evacuations in Long Beach. Cooler weather is expected by Friday.
