The Salzburg Festival has abruptly fired Markus Hinterhäuser as its artistic director, terminating his contract four years early and leaving the prestigious classical music event without clear leadership. The Austrian festival's board cited 'irreconcilable differences of opinion' in its decision to cut short Hinterhäuser's tenure, which was scheduled to run through 2031.

Hinterhäuser, 67, had led the festival since 2017, earning praise for encouraging innovative interpretations of traditional operas. However, his reputation suffered in recent years, particularly over his support for conductor Teodor Currentzis, who faced criticism for Russian state ties following the Ukraine invasion.
