The Kennedy Center has suffered another major blow as Jean Davidson stepped down as executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra after just two years. Davidson, who joined in April 2023, cited the "current climate" as her reason for leaving, telling The New York Times she had been seeking new opportunities for months.

Her departure follows President Trump's controversial announcement to close the performing arts center from July 4 until 2028 for extensive renovations. The National Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1931 by conductor Hans Kindler and an affiliate of the Kennedy Center since 1986, now faces leadership uncertainty during a critical period. Davidson had planned to stay through the orchestra's centennial celebration in 2031.

Trump's takeover of the Kennedy Center has triggered a wave of defections and protests. Composer Philip Glass recently withdrew his Symphony No. 15 premiere, citing "direct conflict" with the center's values under current leadership. The president has replaced the board with Republican allies and promised to transform the facility into a "World Class Bastion of Arts," though critics question the timing and communication around these sweeping changes.
