Russia’s Satellites Jam GPS Across Europe, Raising Security Concerns

Russian satellites have repeatedly jammed GPS signals across Europe, a finding revealed by scientists and U.S. military briefers. Researchers linked at least three of 75 incidents since 2019 to the EKS constellation, used for missile‑launch detection.

The interference, lasting under ten seconds, disturbed navigation networks in the U.S., China and the EU but spared Russia’s own GPS services. An EU probe, now classified, is building tools to detect and locate such jamming.

Experts warn that space‑based jamming offers far greater reach than ground‑based tactics, potentially disabling navigation for entire continents. The incidents expose a critical vulnerability in a technology essential to power grids, cell towers and aviation.

These events underscore the need for robust counter‑measures. The U.S. Air Force and EU regulators must accelerate investment in resilient GPS infrastructure to protect civilian and military operations from future disruptions.
