Russian Tanker Diverts from Cuba Amid US Fuel Blockade

A Russian tanker loaded with 242,000 barrels of diesel that had appeared bound for Cuba has unexpectedly diverted toward South America, deepening the island's severe energy crisis. The vessel's abrupt turn leaves Havana without its most promising fuel lifeline since the Trump administration imposed an effective oil embargo against the island in January.

Moscow had been the only nation willing to breach Washington's blockade, delivering 730,000 barrels of crude in March. That supply has largely run dry across the island. Cubans now endure electricity for just a few hours daily, cook over charcoal and wood fires, and face black-market gasoline prices topping $40 a gallon as state reserves empty.

Washington denies engineering the tanker's diversion, though President Trump has threatened tariffs on any country exporting fuel to Cuba and previously ordered U.S. forces to escort another vessel away. The Justice Department also charged former Cuban president Raúl Castro with murder last week, ratcheting up pressure as Havana calls the embargo an illegal act of war.

Energy researcher Jorge Piñón estimates the lost cargo was worth roughly $25 million and would have powered trucks and tractors that Cuba cannot fuel from domestic wells. With the tanker now set to sell its diesel elsewhere for profit, Russia stands to collect a commercial windfall while Cuba braces for deepening blackouts and economic paralysis.
