As record diesel prices weigh on the G. O. P.’s midterm outlook, several Republicans have urged President Trump to pause U.S. diesel exports to lower costs.

The national average price of diesel has surged to $6.53, up nearly 75 percent since the war in Ukraine began. Trump said his administration was exploring a ban, but Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum rejected the idea, warning it could backfire by reducing domestic supply. Diesel powers farm machinery, factory equipment, and most commercial vehicles.

Experts note an export ban might not lower prices if refiners cut production. Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee introduced two bills: one for an outright ban through January 2027, another triggering a ban when prices hit $5 per gallon. Representative Clay Fuller of Georgia co-sponsored the bills.

Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana backed a 90-day ban, though Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy oppose it. Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa echoed calls to stop exports, citing Iowans’ financial strain. Senator Chuck Grassley referenced Nixon’s 1973 soybean embargo, urging Trump to act similarly.
