Actor Randolph Mantooth, whose portrayal of paramedic Johnny Gage on NBC's "Emergency!" brought the profession into American living rooms, died July 9 in Ventura at 80. The series, which ran for six seasons starting in 1972, coincided with the real-world expansion of emergency medical services and is credited with accelerating public acceptance of paramedicine. Mantooth performed most of his own stunts alongside co-star Kevin Tighe, lending the show a physical authenticity that distinguished it from contemporaries.

After "Emergency!" ended, Mantooth built a durable second act in daytime television. He joined ABC's "Loving" in 1987 as Clay Alden, followed by a two-year run on "General Hospital" and subsequent roles on "The City," "As the World Turns," and "One Life to Live." Guest appearances on primetime staples including "Dallas," "Charlie's Angels," and later "Sons of Anarchy" demonstrated crossover appeal that sustained a four-decade career.

Born in Sacramento to a father of Cherokee and Seminole descent, Mantooth trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on a scholarship after Santa Barbara City College. A Universal contract launched early credits on "Ironside," "The Virginian," and "Marcus Welby, M.D." He remained an advocate for firefighters and EMTs throughout his life, leveraging his signature role for public service. Diagnosed with cancer in 2015, he is survived by his wife Kristen and siblings Donald and Tonya.
