Starting Friday, Puerto Rico’s water authority will turn off water for rotating 48-hour periods in parts of San Juan and surrounding areas, affecting more than 180,000 sendiri customer accounts.

The drought has worsened, with July recording the driest month on record for the capital at just 0.54 inches of rain and the second hottest temperature. Over 25% of the island is in severe drought and 36% in moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Gov. Jenniffer González said the situation is out of their hands and warned that rationing could extend to 72 hours. Meteorologist María Novoa García predicts dry conditions will persist until at least September, while officials plan to distribute potable water by truck, prioritizing hospitals and elderly residents.

Communities have endured repeated outages for more than 100 days, sparking lawsuits from San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero and Rep. Domingo J. Torres García demanding accountability and swift action to repair the aging infrastructure.
