California Ends 25-Year Drought Streak

California has zero areas of abnormal dryness for the first time in 25 years, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. An exceptionally wet holiday season, marked by powerful atmospheric rivers, has soaked the state. Currently, 14 of the 17 major water reservoirs are at 70% capacity or higher, providing a critical buffer for the year ahead.

This milestone offers a dramatic reprieve following years of historic drought and catastrophic wildfires. The state’s last prolonged dry spell lasted over 1,300 days, ending in 2023. However, climate scientists warn this relief is temporary. A warming climate intensifies weather extremes, creating a volatile cycle of deluges followed by deep dryness that can prime landscapes for disaster.

UC climate scientist Daniel Swain describes this pattern as hydroclimate whiplash. Heavy rainfall fuels vegetation growth, which later becomes abundant fuel during extreme dryness. While wildfire risk is currently minimal, the state’s snowpack remains below average. The long-term forecast suggests California must prepare for more severe weather swings, not a permanent return to stable conditions.
