Penn Station Gets $7B Facelift

Amtrak has selected Penn Transformation Partners to remake New York's Penn Station, transforming the dreary rail hub with soaring ceilings, natural light, and stone and bronze materials. The ambitious project carries a $7 billion price tag that raises questions about funding sources. Vornado, a major developer with properties near the station, leads the partnership with international firms Halmar and Skanska.

The funding plan remains unclear despite federal intentions to seek help from New York and New Jersey. Officials criticized Amtrak for a "back-door process" with "zero accountability." The Trump administration took control from New York officials last year, prompting Governor Hochul to withdraw $1.3 billion in state funding. Only $250 million in public funding has been committed so far.

The plan involves purchasing and razing a theater attached to Madison Square Garden to create a glass-walled entrance. Construction is slated to begin within 18 months, though no timeline beyond 2027 has been disclosed. A rendering shows a wall engraved with Trump's name and presidential seal, sparking political controversy over the project's direction and potential naming rights.
