Pakistani Airstrike on Kabul Rehab Center Kills Hundreds, Escalates Tensions

At least 400 people were killed when a Pakistani airstrike hit a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul, Afghanistan, Afghan officials stated. The attack, described as the deadliest in a three-month conflict between the neighbors, occurred Monday night. Pakistan countered that the target was an ammunition depot, not the facility run by the Taliban government.

The compound housed a 180-foot-long structure used for meals and prayer, according to Afghan officials. Local residents recognized it as the Omid drug rehabilitation center. Emergency workers pulled hundreds of bodies from the smoking rubble, while Pakistani officials declared the strike a precision attack on Taliban infrastructure. However, witnesses and the UN reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including health facilities.

The airstrike has escalated regional tensions, with a Taliban spokesman warning of retaliation. Pakistan accuses the Taliban government of harboring terrorists responsible for attacks within Pakistan. The conflict has already displaced over 115,000 people and killed 75 civilians. While the US supports Pakistan's right to defend itself, calls for dialogue by China have been ignored. The destroyed center, a former US military base, held 200 patients at the time of the strike.
