Fast-moving wildfires, fueled by extreme heat, have devastated communities in northern Ontario, prompting multiple evacuations. Residents of Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation were ordered to leave, with many displaced to Thunder Bay. Winds out of the northwest are fanning the flames of dozens of forest fires, with wind gusts up to 40 km/h expected.

Ontario's minister for emergency preparedness, Jill Dunlop, has requested federal assistance, including the potential deployment of Canadian soldiers and the rapid deployment of aircraft and crews. Several First Nations communities, including Armstrong, Lac La Croix First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, Gull Bay First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation, have issued evacuation orders. One blaze has already damaged and destroyed homes and buildings on Namaygoosisagagun First Nation.

Premier Doug Ford stated that crews are battling over 180 wildfires across the province. Air quality warnings are in effect from Thunder Bay to Kingston, London, and Windsor, with smoke reaching parts of the northern United States. There were 176 active fires in Ontario as of Thursday, with 134 in the northwest region, 62 of which were out of control.
