Andy Burnham has warned that Britain is a “tinderbox” following a period of intense heat and drought, as the nation's infrastructure strains under the pressure. He announced a temporary ban on disposable barbecues, urging the public to exercise caution due to the high risk of outdoor fires.

This warning comes as the National Fire Chiefs Council reported 1,085 wildfires across the UK this year, exceeding the previous record. The extreme weather has also impacted the railway system, leading to train cancellations and two derailments, one of which caused injuries. While addressing the climate crisis, Burnham's government is considering softening targets for electric vehicle sales, a move criticized by environmental groups for potentially increasing CO₂ emissions.

The government is exploring reducing the 2030 zero-emission vehicle sales target from 80% to 50%, though the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales will remain. Heidi Alexander, transport secretary, stated the need to review targets for practicality and support for British industry. Meanwhile, environmental campaigners like Ami McCarthy of Greenpeace UK have voiced strong opposition to weakening these regulations, emphasizing the negative consequences for drivers, energy security, the climate, and the economy.
