Old Dominion Shooting: Radicalized Vet Kills Army Pilot

A former U.S. soldier radicalized by Islamic State propaganda fatally shot Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, an Army helicopter pilot and ROTC instructor, during a class at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The gunman, identified as 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, shouted "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire, killing Shah and wounding two students.

Jalloh had a history of extremist connections, including a 2016 conviction for attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization. He served 11 years in federal prison before being released in 2024, despite concerns about recidivism among radicalized inmates. Experts note the U.S. lacks organized de-radicalization programs for such prisoners.

Shah, a decorated combat veteran with multiple Bronze Star awards, had returned to his alma mater to teach military science after years of deployments. The shooting has raised questions about the monitoring of released extremists and the targeting of military personnel by radicalized individuals.
