A new forecast from the School Construction Authority predicts New York City public schools could shed as many as 153,000 students by the 2034‑35 school year. Enrollment stands at roughly 781,000 pupils today, down 123,000 since the pandemic began. The decline reflects falling birthrates, an aging population and families leaving the city, echoing a nationwide slide that has already forced budget cuts and staff reductions.

City officials acknowledge pressure on facilities and staffing. The Department of Education said it will keep families informed while reshaping school capacity, but the projections cover every grade and borough, with the steepest drop among Black students. Pre‑kindergarten numbers stay flat at about 88,000, yet only half are expected to move to kindergarten. Middle‑income neighborhoods see the sharpest outflow, prompting landlords to reconsider leasing terms.

Similar trends ripple through other metros: Los Angeles may lose 250,000 pupils, Boston forecasts a 3,000‑student decline, and District 75’s 28,000 special‑needs cohort remains separate. Charter enrollment has surged to 150,000, and private schools slipped 9 percent, underscoring parents’ expanding options. The shrinking base forces landlords, contractors and vendors to reassess contracts tied to school capacity.
