Newsom's $1.5M PAC Book Push Propels Memoir Sales

California Governor Gavin Newsom's political action committee spent $1.56 million to purchase and distribute copies of his memoir, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the book's total print sales. The Campaign for Democracy Committee offered supporters any amount donation in exchange for a copy of "Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery," resulting in approximately 67,000 books distributed.

The book purchase represented the PAC's largest expenditure in the first quarter of 2026, with payments made to Porchlight Book Company. Newsom's team claims the donation drive netted more money than the book costs, though the governor receives no royalties from these sales. The memoir has sold 97,400 print copies total since publication, according to Circana BookScan.

Newsom's strategy mirrors similar tactics by other politicians, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, who paid $97,524 for her own book distribution. The governor promoted the offer following California's Proposition 50 redistricting victory, framing it as funding for future political battles. While political committees commonly use books to attract donors, the scale of Newsom's $1.5 million investment stands out as particularly substantial.
