California Governor Gavin Newsom has a three-word response when asked about a potential 2028 presidential run: "It's wildly premature." The Democrat made the comment during a press conference where he signed a $590 million emergency loan for Bay Area Transit, according to the California Post.

Newsom quickly pivoted to promoting his upcoming memoir "Young Man in a Hurry," set for release on February 24. The book, published by Penguin Random House, explores his journey from San Francisco mayor to governor and examines his experiences with identity and belonging in California politics. When pressed further about his political future, Newsom emphasized the "precious time in American history" as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

Early polling shows Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris as leading Democratic contenders for the 2028 nomination. In a June interview with the Wall Street Journal, Newsom acknowledged he could "see unfold" a path to higher office but stressed it was too early to decide. The governor emphasized that regardless of whether he enters the race, "all of us have a responsibility and a role at this time to stand tall."
