Medical Costs Force 82 Million Americans to Cut Spending

A new survey reveals that 82 million Americans — one-third of the population — are making significant sacrifices to afford health care. The findings show 15 percent borrowed money and 11 percent skipped meals in the past year to cover medical expenses, with uninsured individuals reporting even more severe trade-offs.

Conducted by the West Health-Gallup Center, the survey found Americans are delaying major life decisions due to health care costs. About 29 percent postponed vacations, 26 percent delayed medical treatments, and smaller percentages postponed having children, retiring, or changing jobs. Even households earning over $240,000 reported postponing significant events.

The broader affordability crisis looms over midterm elections, with health care costs now exceeding concerns about food, gas, and utilities. When enhanced Obamacare subsidies ended last year, millions saw premiums more than double. Employer coverage isn't immune either — family health insurance premiums now approach $27,000 annually, with rising out-of-pocket costs adding to the burden.
