A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, shot and killed a man who had injured him with a knife while resisting arrest, according to the city's police chief. The man, identified by local officials as Corey Ruiz, was in his 30s. Police were responding to reports of bicycle theft and vehicle break-ins when the man fled on a bicycle. A struggle ensued in an intersection, during which the man produced a knife, injuring an officer.

An unsuccessful Taser deployment was followed by the injured officer firing his weapon, striking Ruiz. Lifesaving measures were administered, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital. Four officers were involved or witnessed the incident, and the veteran officer who fired his weapon has not been identified. The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, and all four officers have been placed on administrative leave.

The incident has sparked protests, with activists highlighting similarities to the 2015 police shooting of Tony Robinson on the same street. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway urged transparency, while Governor Tony Evers called for accountability. Attorney Ben Crump is representing Ruiz's family. Police Chief John Patterson requested calm, noting that not all video evidence is publicly available.
