Kennedy Center Loses Trump Naming Lawsuit Against Jazz Musician

A federal judge dismissed the Kennedy Center's breach-of-contract lawsuit against jazz musician Chuck Redd, who canceled his 2025 holiday concert after the institution's board added President Trump's name to the building. Judge Tanya M. Jones Bosier ruled that no enforceable contract existed since Redd never signed the performance agreement.

The dispute stems from the Kennedy Center board's controversial decision to rename the venue as The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. When Redd withdrew following the renaming vote, the Center sued claiming damages from lost goodwill and marketing expenses. However, the judge noted the concert was free and other artists had also canceled, minimizing actual financial harm.

This ruling compounds recent legal setbacks for the Kennedy Center following Judge Christopher R. Cooper's May 29 decision that only Congress can rename the institution. The Center's general counsel has ordered immediate removal of Trump's name from official materials and signage by June 12.

Kennedy Center officials plan to appeal both rulings, creating ongoing uncertainty around the institution's branding and potential liability from the naming controversy. The legal costs and reputational damage continue mounting as the dispute drags through the courts.
