An American Airlines regional jet, Republic Airways Flight 4464, veered off its approach at JFK and aborted, nearly colliding with an Air Canada regional jet, Jazz Aviation Flight 8554. The two aircraft, coming from Indianapolis and Toronto, were only 0.66 mi apart horizontally and 250 ft vertically before collision‑warning systems forced evasive maneuvers. The FAA now probes the incident following the previous near miss.

Flightradar 24 data places the aircraft 0.66 mi apart at one point, a distance that would normally trigger a 500‑ft buffer. Jazz Aviation said crews reacted immediately to warning alerts and air‑traffic controller guidance, emphasizing training and safety protocols. American Airlines has yet to comment, but the incident underscores rising operational pressures after staff shortages and costly shutdowns and regulatory scrutiny intensified.

The FAA’s investigation follows a separate close call involving Southwest Airlines jets at Nashville International Airport, where a controller error brought aircraft within 500 ft of each other. Such incidents raise questions about air‑traffic control workload and technology limits. Airlines may face increased scrutiny, potential fines, and costly procedural upgrades as regulators tighten safety oversight for operational integrity and customer confidence.
