Jasper County, South Carolina, has become the nation's fastest-growing county, with its population surging to 38,000 this year from 29,000 in 2020, according to new Census Bureau estimates. The coastal county's growth is driven by retirees and newcomers attracted to its beaches, low taxes, and proximity to Hilton Head Island and Savannah. Communities like Latitude Margaritaville are building thousands of new homes.

While some residents welcome the economic opportunities, others worry about losing the county's rural character. Traffic congestion, strained healthcare services, and environmental concerns are mounting as development accelerates. Conservationists warn that wetlands and wildlife habitats face immediate threats, with some calling the development "imminent." The county's natural buffers, crucial for storm protection amid intensifying climate change, are particularly at risk.

Local officials are attempting to balance growth with preservation, concentrating development around Hardeeville and Ridgeland while protecting rural areas. A recent 1% sales tax approved by voters will generate $376 million for transportation and $94 million for land and water protection. Meanwhile, Hardeeville is positioning itself as a business hub, leveraging its proximity to the Port of Savannah and attracting manufacturers offering jobs with average salaries of $60,000.
