An Israeli settler, Yinon Levi, has been charged with reckless manslaughter for the killing of prominent Palestinian activist Odeh Hathalin in July 2025, a rare prosecution of a settler for violence against Palestinians. The indictment, filed at the Beersheba District Court, also includes charges of armed trespassing and property damage.

This is the first time since the October 7, 2023 attacks that an Israeli has been indicted for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank. Violence in the West Bank has surged, with B’Tselem reporting that 37 Palestinians were killed by settlers since October 2023. Hathalin, a 31-year-old activist and participant in the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land,” was shot while documenting an excavator clearing an unauthorized route on private Palestinian land.

The indictment alleges Levi fired a single shot after a confrontation escalated, striking Hathalin. Levi, who founded an unauthorized outpost, had previously been targeted by US and EU sanctions. The charges come amid escalating violence in the West Bank.
