An Israeli man was shot and killed near the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf on Sunday, on the eve of Yom Kippur, according to Israeli officials who said a Palestinian suspect had been arrested.

The victim was identified by a local settler council as Netanel Shakrun, a father of six who had gone to a nearby spring to perform a ritual bath before the holiday. The Israeli military and police arrested a suspect at a hospital in Ramallah but did not release his name.

Violence in the occupied West Bank has escalated since the Hamas-led attacks on Oct. 7, 2023. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and civilians since then, according to the UN, while over 40 Israelis have died in the territory over the past three years.

Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the killing by ordering security agencies to reinforce forces, impose curfews, make arrests and demolish the home of the accused attacker. International criticism has mounted over settler violence against Palestinians, with the US, UK, France and Canada imposing or considering economic restrictions on West Bank settlements.
