An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in the torso during a confrontation under a highway overpass in Northwest Austin on Sunday, local authorities said. The incident occurred as the Trump administration intensifies deportation efforts. The victim, identified by immigration lawyer Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch as a Venezuelan immigrant, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the shooting followed a "small foot pursuit," though it remains unclear if the man was the target of an immigration operation. Mayor Kirk Watson expressed anger but not surprise, citing a pattern of ICE conduct in other cities. Rep. Greg Casar echoed community distrust of federal accounts.

This marks the second ICE shooting in Texas in recent months. In July, an ICE agent in Houston shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant and father of 35 years, who was not the intended target. Days later, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian immigrant, was fatally shot by ICE in Biddeford, Maine. Since January 2025, more than 20 people have been shot by federal immigration agents, resulting in six deaths, including three U.S. citizens. Most shootings involved officers firing at vehicles.

Federal officials have not commented on the Austin shooting. City leaders demanded transparency, noting past inaccuracies in DHS accounts. The blue Toyota Corolla at the scene showed bullet damage, and the area — home to many Latino residents — has seen increased immigration enforcement activity.
